hamhamham lady

Very lovely lady from Lesotho.

We met this lady at the top of Paradise Pass. She needed a lift home to avoid being bitten by dogs. Fortunately we were traveling in a tourist bus and we could help her out.

During the trip, for some reason she only wanted to talk to me, but my command of the Sotho language was nonexistent. Peter could speak it, but no, she insisted talking to me only.

During the conversation she kept on repeating the sound "hamhamham". We had no idea what she meant, so when we arrived at her destination we offered her some food. For this she thanked us profusely, even by praying out loud until the whole town became aware that she had been helped by tourists.

What an interesting meeting.

Only as we continued our journey, Peter finally said that the sound she made was not intended to ask for food, but to indicate the sound of dogs biting...

Jan TIk Thanks a lot for this translation!!!

Below is an excerpt from my HDR travel blog www.LostManProject.com. I'm currently traveling the world. Feel free to tag along if you're interested.

Scotland is everything I imagined it to be. Not to be stereotypical, but much of what was in my head about Scotland was a result of the movie Braveheart. Most of my friends know I have a fascination with William Wallace and the highlands of Scotland. The running joke is that most of my friends had a bet that I would buy a kilt and run through some random Scottish farmers field pretending I was William Wallace. I hope I didn't let down too many of my friends in saying that I didn't partake in any William Wallace reenactments. Maybe next time.

Ironically, Scotland reminded me a lot of New Zealand, where I started my round-the-world journey. The dramatic landscapes, cooler weather and copious amounts of rain are all characteristics of both of the subliminal lands. As a photographer, the landscape in Scotland is incredibly inspiring. Next time, I'll have to spend more time here.
