When doing photography, there are particular subjects that provoke curiosity. For instance, people are always a favorite subject of mine. I think a photo becomes much more interesting when a living person with a personal story is part of it. Aside from people, one of the best ways to provoke curiosity and emotion is by photographing a subject of the past. I was very pleased to come across this massive relic just off the beach. You wonder why it's there. What happened? Why is this anchor no longer attached to a ship? Capturing landscapes is fun but including a story from the past in that landscape is even better.

I did some research and this particular anchor is from the great ship called The Marie Gabrielle. The ship was en route from China with a load of tea when she encountered strong winds and became shipwrecked on the reefs jutting out from the beach. The area has quite a few shipwreck sites along its coast with nothing left but the rusting anchor.

This shot was fun to capture. The anchor sits on the flat and sturdy coral just off the beach. The waves would crash in and give you two minute intervals before a foot of water would forcefully rush into the area around the anchor. In addition to the tide, the coral has extremely large and round gaps that one has to navigate around to avoid . It was actually quite fun to time it right and avoid getting drenched with water. It might be tough to see but this anchor is massive. It is at least five to six feet long and must weigh close to a ton. After being pounded by waves for the last century the anchor really hasn't moved much.

Again, I'm traveling the world. If you're interested in following my travels and photo tips please check out www.LostManProject.com. Cheers from Australia.

It's views such as this that blew me away while I toured Vietnam. By far the most intensely beautiful place I've experienced thus far on my trip, the colors are more vivid, culture is richer and their history more compelling than most places I've traveled to in this world. It's no wonder the Vietnamese are fiercely proactive in defense of their independence and sovereignty. I wonder what Vietnam will be like in a few years. The country is one of the last Asian dragons to wake from its slumber and is changing rapidly. Ho Chi Minh city has skyscrapers sprouting up left and right, foreign investors are building resorts on the coast by the second and the once simple agrarian lifestyle is slowly fading. I'm happy to have seen it when I did and hope that it can keep its natural beauty and character as the country modernizes.

I'm currently traveling the world. You can follow my travels on my HDR travel website if you're interesting. The site is www.LostManProject.com. Cheers from Vietnam.
