My girlfriend and I plan on traveling to Belize in late April and would like to know where are the good areas to find lodging while I'm there. I'm interested in price, proximity to attractions, safety, etc. Also, are there any things I should know about before traveling over there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you like the beach and associated activities like snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing Ambergris Caye is a good place to spend several days. The little town of San Pedro has lots of good restaurants and bars and there are many nice resorts, condos and hotels on the island. It is probably the most visited of the numerous cayes and felt very safe. If you like to snorkel, I recommend going out with "Sea-duced by Belize" - we had a blast!
The mainland has lots of interesting attractions, but it can be a little more challenging. Many of the areas in Belize City are definitely not very safe - especially at night.
I'm NOT usually one to recommend tours, but I was glad that we hired a tour guide when we were there. He provided us with a lot of fascinating information, got us into places quickly and easily (he knew what times to go to avoid the cruise ship crowds) and kept us from accidently wandering into shady neighborhoods. Some suggested attractions include: cave tubing, Crooked Tree Wildlife Refuge, the Zoo, any of the Mayan Ruins (Altun Ha, Caracol, Cerros, Cahal Pech, Lamanai, Xunantunich)
Have a great time!
