Lencois Maranhenses – Jewels in the Brazilian crown

Considered one of the seven wonders of the nature, there is nothing comparable to the astonishing Brazilian Lencois Maranhenses. It is completely unique and should be classified among the Top 10 places to explore in South America. Lencois seems a great desert, but actually it is a huge oasis with dunes of very white sands and innumerable lagoons of sweet and crystalline water.

Lencois Park is 155 hectare of unique landscape on the east coast of Maranhao (State of Brazil). It would be a big desert if it had not rained 300 times more frequently than in the Sahara. The rain creates a true tropical oasis that is  a rare geological phenomenon formed over thousands of years through the action of nature.

The area is covered by huge infinite dunes up to 40 feet tall and natural water lagoons whose waters range from shades of green and blue. The scenery is of a rare beauty: the dunes are molded by the wind and the trapped tropical rains have created immense pools of fresh, green and blue waters.
